"Clif and Darrell Friesenhahn are two of the most honest and certainly
the most knowledgeable mechanics you will find anywhere."
Clifton "Clif" Friesenhahn was a New Braunfels original — born in nearby Marion, Texas, educated at New Braunfels High School, and shaped by a deep love for his hometown and the people in it. After serving two proud years in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Lexington, Clif came home with skilled hands and a clear sense of purpose. He put both to work first as an automotive mechanic, then teaching Automotive Mechanics at his own alma mater, New Braunfels High School — sharing his knowledge with the next generation before setting his sights on a dream entirely his own.
On June 2, 1969, alongside his dear friend Oliver "Buddy" Marbach — a former stock car racer at the Pan American Speedway, whose pit crew chief had been none other than Clif himself — he opened B&C Service Center on North Business IH 35. What began as a modest garage with full-service filling station support became something far more: a gathering place. Old-timers came in and spoke to Clif in German. Neighbors traded news and stories over the hood of a truck. The shop was never just a garage — it was a piece of what made New Braunfels feel like home.
When Buddy stepped away in 1971, Clif and his wife Connie took full ownership. And Connie was no silent partner. She managed the books, pumped gas, and — when duty called — got behind the wheel of a tow truck herself. She was the backbone and the heartbeat of B&C, day in and day out, for decades. Two people, one dream, and a community that never forgot either of them.
Clif ran that shop for over 50 years, never once straying from the philosophy he opened with: fix what needs fixing, don't invent problems, and treat every customer like a neighbor. He passed away on May 2, 2023, at age 86, peacefully at home and surrounded by the family he cherished. New Braunfels lost one of its finest — a man who served his country, shaped young mechanics, rescued his city in a flood, and spent half a century quietly doing right by everyone who came through his door.
When severe flooding struck New Braunfels in 1972, Clif Friesenhahn didn't wait. He personally rescued and repaired numerous city utility vehicles — including one that had been submerged in the spring-fed pool at Landa Park. He didn't do it for recognition. He did it because that's who he was.
A customer once brought in a Ford pickup that another shop had declared in need of a full transmission rebuild. Clif drove it around the block, pulled a rubber vacuum hose, trimmed the end with his pocket knife, and handed the keys back — no charge. "Now you owe for a transmission rebuild," he said with a smile. The truck ran fine for years.
B&C wasn't just a shop — it was a living piece of New Braunfels' German heritage. Old-timers would come in and speak to Clif in German, swap stories, share news. Customers remarked that even hearing those conversations was a unique and special experience. Clif made everyone feel at home.
Behind every great legacy is someone who makes it possible. For Clif, that was Connie. She ran the front, managed the finances, pumped gas, towed vehicles when needed, and raised two children alongside a business she believed in. Connie remains a co-owner of B&C today — a living testament to love, loyalty, and a life poured into this community.
Darrell Friesenhahn didn't choose this life so much as grow into it. He was 8 years old the first time he helped out at his dad's shop — fetching tools, watching, absorbing everything. There was never a question of whether he'd follow this path; he was on it almost before he could walk. He earned a degree in auto mechanics and never looked back — eventually stepping in to carry the shop his father built, and to honor the name his father made it.
Customers who knew Clif recognize something unmistakable in Darrell. He has his father's hands and his father's character. He looks at a problem with clear eyes, tells you honestly what he finds, and recommends only what actually needs to be done. He'll wait on a second repair if the first one might resolve it. He'll tell you to keep the fluid topped off rather than spend money you don't need to spend. That kind of mechanic is rare. This family has produced two of them.
Beside Darrell is his wife, Donna Friesenhahn — and customers notice her immediately. She carries forward the same warmth, attentiveness, and genuine care that Connie brought to this shop for decades. Customers mention her by name in their reviews, and the sentiment is consistent: you feel valued here. Not just as a customer — but as a person.
Together, Darrell, Donna, and Connie co-own and operate B&C — three people bound by family, by faith, by this town, and by a shared belief that doing honest work for your neighbors is its own reward. Over 55 years later, New Braunfels keeps proving them right.
Darrell Friesenhahn was 8 years old the first time he helped out at B&C. He grew up in this shop — watching his father work, learning the trade, and absorbing a philosophy that no classroom could teach. Honesty is the only business model that lasts.
"Darrell is one of the most honest and trustworthy men I have ever met. He tells you the problem and gives you his recommendations. He keeps the customer's best interests at heart and does only what is necessary."
— Verified CARFAX Customer, 2023
"Donna and Darrell were very courteous every time I talked to them. Unlike other places I have been recently, Darrell was very attentive, up front, and genuinely concerned with my mechanical problem."
— Verified CARFAX Customer, 2025
Some of B&C's customers today are the children and grandchildren of people who brought their cars to Clif in the 1970s. One family noted they had trusted B&C "for three generations." Others have driven back from 90 miles away just to have their vehicle serviced here. That kind of loyalty is never given — it is earned, one honest repair at a time.
Darrell's sister Debi Althaus also contributed her time and talent to the shop office over the years. This has always been a family operation — not a franchise, not a chain — real people with real stakes, serving real neighbors in the community they grew up in.
In recognition of 56+ years of continuous operation and community service, B&C Service Center was honored with the prestigious Texas Treasure Business Award by the Texas Historical Commission — a program that has recognized fewer than 500 Texas businesses since its founding in 2005. The Comal County Commissioners Court issued a formal proclamation in B&C's honor. It is a distinction Clif Friesenhahn would have been too humble to brag about — but one his community is deeply proud to give.
Three people. One family. One mission — the same one Clif and Connie started with on June 2, 1969.
Started helping in the shop at age 8. Earned a degree in auto mechanics and has spent his entire career carrying on the tradition his father built. Customers call him one of the most trustworthy people they've ever met — and they mean it.
Warm, attentive, and genuinely caring — Donna is the first voice you'll hear when you call B&C, and the reason so many first-time customers feel like they've been coming here for years. She carries Connie's legacy of hospitality forward beautifully.
Connie kept the books, pumped the gas, and towed the cars for over 50 years alongside Clif. She remains a co-owner of B&C today — a living connection to the values and spirit this shop was built on, and a daily reminder of what it means to truly give yourself to your community.
